A model boycotted a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show by protesting on the runway

The INSIDER Summary

  • Musician and model Raury protested Dolce & Gabbana on the runway during Milan fashion week.
  • His decision to stage a silent protest was a last-minute one, after he learned of D&G's shirts mocking protests.
  • He wrote "protest,""I am not your scapegoat," and "DG Give Me Freedom" on his torso.
  • He also held his fist in the air with another model.

Controversy continues to swirl around the Dolce & Gabbana brand, from its
open support of dressing Melania Trump, to its recent T-shirts mocking the people protesting them, to their trolling of singer Miley Cyrus on Instagram over her calling them out for their political beliefs. And those controversies apparently weren't lost on at least one model who walked in the millennial-themed D&G show at Milan men's fashion week over the weekend.

During the finale, one model in the show, the Atlanta musician Raury, appeared shirtless with the words "Protest,""I am not your scapegoat" and "DG Give Me Freedom" written across his chest. At one point, he held his fist in the air with another model beside him.

raury

In an interview with GQ, Raury revealed that his decision to stage this silent protest was a last-minute one, after he learned of D&G's shirts mocking protests the day before.

"Boycotting matters. Boycotting is real," Raury said. "Dolce’s entire campaign says it's not real. I know that if I walk out there and support or endorse anything that sits next to Trump — or support someone who even makes dinner for Trump or whatever — then that means that I support Trump also. I don't support Trump. So I'm trapped, and I have to let people know that I don't support Trump and I don’t support those who are trying to undermine the voice of the people."

Ultimately, Raury walked the runway for them twice — once wearing a bright yellow tracksuit by the brand and then a second time during that finale, when all the models gathered on stage, which is when he decided to take his shirt off and reveal his message.

AP_17168486699188

He landed on the messaging of "I am not your scapegoat" after feeling like D&G was using these young people, many of whom Raury think had no idea about the Trumps or the T-shirts, to erase some of the controversy.

"So here I am, about to be like, 'Dolce & Gabbana is cool,' but I didn’t know what they had done," Raury said. "And a lot of [models in the runway show] didn’t know what they had done. I felt like Dolce & Gabbana was literally trying to use the youth to wash their hands of any sort of heat from anyone who wants to protest against them."

After fleeing from the show, Raury remains proud of his decision to use this platform for protest. He was, after all, the only young model who used the runway for any sort of resistance to the brand.

"I felt like if nothing happened, then they would be right. And that T-shirt would be right," Raury said. "Dolce would think they can talk s--t about people boycotting, support the first lady of a president who is very parallel to Hitler and bring the millennials and put them in that s--t and nothing would happen. But it's basic math. One plus two equals three. And this is what will always happen."

Mic has reached out to Raury for further comment.

Karlie Kloss was once told she was 'too fat' and 'too skinny' by a casting agent on the same day

Karlie Kloss

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Karlie Kloss is one of the most successful models in the world.
  • She's walked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show runway countless times, starred in campaigns for Nike and Adidas, and more.
  • However, the 24-year-old model still experiences body shaming within the fashion industry.
  • She was once called "too fat" and "too thin" by a casting agency — both on the same day.

Karlie Kloss has worked with the most prestigious designers in the world, graced the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show runway countless times, and has starred in campaigns for Nike and Adidas. Yet even as one of the most successful models of the moment, even she has been subject to the unrealistic standards that plague the industry.

"I was called both too fat and too thin by a casting agent on the same day," Kloss recalled while speaking at Cannes Lions with Hearst's Joanna Coles. Wait, what? If there's a lesson to be gleaned from her anecdote, it's how completely arbitrary and unattainable "conventional" beauty standards can be.

karlie kloss

Kloss, 24, also shared how she mentally deals with outward criticism in her line of work. "I don't want to please anyone but myself," she said, and added that she focuses on her health and strength for success and longevity in modeling, not her weight. Outside of her own experiences, the model also mentioned how she wished female designers would offer more variety for the wide range of women's bodies there are to dress. (Rapturous applause to that.)

Another method to her longevity in the spotlight comes with her side hustle, Kode With Klossy. The camp, which is in its second year, spans 10 cities and offers the opportunity for science- and math-minded girls to learn to code. She admitted that computer science isn't "the sexiest thing," but "I am so passionate about it, and it is genuine."

I don't know, Karlie, computer science is pretty sexy, to be honest.

Tatler has just released a list of English Roses it predicts to be the UK's next "It girls"— and it's safe to say they're all rather well connected.

"It girls" are usually identified as the offspring of aristocracy, celebrities, or the uber-wealthy. They typically live decadent lives of outrageous partying and holidaying, in between modelling and the odd bit of charity work.

Fortunately, the ladies on this list tick all of those boxes.

From Lady Kitty Spencer, the late Princess Diana's niece, to Clara McGregor, the Hollywood actor's daughter, scroll down to meet the 11 UK socialities to watch out for.

11. Greta Bellamacina, 27. A poet, trained actress and filmmaker, Bellamacina is married to fellow artist Robert Montgomery. At 13 she played a Slytherin student in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

10. Bea Fresson, 21. The stepsister of blogger, model, and aristocrat Alice Naylor-Leyland, Fresson studies English and philosophy at Oxford, where she lives in a house with seven other girls.

Kelly Brook

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Model Kelly Brook is under fire for allegedly altering an Instagram photo of her wearing a swimsuit.
  • Fans noticed that the pool and deck featured in the background of her image looked distorted.
  • The 37-year-old model hasn't responded to the allegations.
  • "Sometimes if I see a picture and I can make it a bit better then I will, like everyone else does,” Brook once told The Sun. "I’ve been Photoshopped in every picture since I started modelling. I [don’t] see any problem with it."

In recent years, the fashion industry has come clean about Photoshopping images to fit an unrealistic standard of beauty.

Celebrities, models, and bloggers are also frequently accused of altering their own photos on social media.

British model Kelly Brook is one of the latest celebrities to be accused of manipulating a photo to enhance her curves.

The 37-year-old model's Instagram followers noticed that something was off about this post she shared on July 16. The photo, which we first saw on Yahoo, has quickly gone viral with over 24,000 likes.

Posing in a black lace swimsuit, she can be seen relaxing by a pool. If you zoom in, however, a few planks on the deck behind her appear to be distorted. The water near the right side of the pool also looks odd, taking a slight but noticeable dip.

Model Kelly Brook

"Really wish you would stop photoshopping yourself. It's clear for everyone to see. Shame," one user commented. Another user wrote, "I didn't know pool decks curved liked that!"

A separate commenter blamed the model for "trying to twist reality" and deceive others "when it's not even a photo shoot where it's at least expected."

Hitting back, Brook's fans immediately came to her defense.

One Instagrammer wrote, "who cares if she photoshopped her photo!? Utterly ridiculous that people care... Kelly you look fabulous Photoshopped or not!" Another person questioned why followers were upset. "People unfollowing because of a little photoshop?! Bet all your mates do it honeys, get over it!!! 🙄🙄 #Jealousy," they wrote.

Amid the rumors, Yahoo points out that Brook has previously admitted to airbrushing her photos.

"Sometimes if I see a picture and I can make it a bit better then I will, like everyone else does,” she said in a 2016 interview with The Sun’s Fabulous magazine. "I’ve been Photoshopped in every picture since I started modelling. I [don’t] see any problem with it."

While Brook doesn't think there's anything wrong with Photoshop, other models like Iskra Lawrence have spoken against altering images while some fashion retailers have stopped using the photo editing tool altogether.

A representative for Kelly Brook did not immediately reply to INSIDER's request for comment.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Model Kelly Brook was recently targeted by body-shamers when she posted a bikini picture from her vacation on Instagram.
  • Trolls called her a "beached whale" and suggested that she lose weight in the comments.
  • Brook replied to a fan who defended her against body-shamers with a joke over Twitter.
  • "I have thick skin!! Literally," the model tweeted.

It seems like body-shamers always have something to say — especially when it comes to celebrities who lead their lives in the public eye.

In late July, model Kelly Brook became one of the latest celebrities to be targeted by online bullies who left hateful comments on a bikini picture she posted on Instagram.

Brook deleted the picture, which was taken on her vacation in France, but the photo still exists online. And there's still some evidence of the upsetting comments she received.

"Maybe you should lose 5 kg," one user suggested, according to CelebsNow. Another user called her a "beached whale."

Luckily, Brook's fans defended her. One fan tweeted the original Instagram photo with an uplifting message:

"Let the haters hate Kelly, they're just missing out on what the rest of us enjoy!" they wrote.

Another fan said that she was "so annoyed" that Brook was being body-shamed.

It looks like Brook agreed. She retweeted this fan's message with a joke.

"I have thick skin!! Literally," Brook wrote, shutting her haters down with a perfectly sarcastic response.

The model also thanked her fans for coming to her defense.

"I have Lovely Smart [sic] people [who] follow me on social media who i [sic] like talking with! I will not let the negativity of a few stop my [from] sharing," she wrote.

This isn't the first time that Brook has been targeted by body-shamers.

During the same vacation in France this July, the model was accused of Photoshopping this Instagram to make her waist appear smaller.

Trolls on the internet love to accuse celebrities of using Photoshop to change their appearance; it's just another type of harmful body-shaming. However, there's arguably nothing wrong with using Photoshop to edit Instagram photos.

Brook hasn't addressed the allegations that she Photoshopped the picture. While nobody should have to respond to body-shamers, the model's recent tweet makes us think that she would have have the perfect comeback.

A model spoke out against using Photoshop on social media in the most powerful way

Amanda Steele_1

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Amanda Steele is a popular model and blogger based out of Los Angeles.
  • Recently, she spoke out on Twitter against those who Photoshop their Instagram photos.
  • Steele believes that Photoshopping creates an unrealistic standard of beauty that is misleading.
  • Instead, she believes people should "appreciate natural beauty."
  • Her views have gone viral, with several users commenting on the issue.

The question of whether or not Photoshop should be used on social media has been the subject of fierce debate.

Some users don't see a problem with it, while others believe altering images poses a dangerous threat to those who believe they are real.

Popular model and blogger Amanda Steele is the latest person to speak out on the subject. In a series of tweets, the 27-year-old argued against people who "edit themselves so much on Instagram."

Her main point was that it's impossible for anyone to meet the standard of beauty Photoshopping creates.

"People edit themselves so much on Instagram it's sad that people can't just appreciate natural beauty,"Steele tweeted to her 991,000 followers. "How is ANYONE supposed to live up to these expectations when they are false??"

In particular, she called out "influencers" with large social followings. "Making your personal profile [an] unrealistic version of yourself is not fair," she wrote.

"There are so many girls out there wondering why they aren't that beautiful or skinny etc... you have no idea what you put these girls thru,"she tweeted.

However, some of Steele's followers questioned her own authenticity when she shares selfies online.

One person suggested that "makeup is considered editing too" in response to Steele's rant.

Whether or not you agree with Steele's stance on Photoshopping, her call to "NEVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO PEOPLE ONLINE" is a message we can get behind.

Ashley Graham asked a magazine not to Photoshop her and to make her cellulite 'bigger'

Ashley Graham

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Ashley Graham is the cover star of New York Magazine's Fashion issue this August.
  • During the photo shoot, Graham asked the magazine not to Photoshop her.
  • The model also told the magazine to "keep the cellulite" in photos where her thighs look uneven, and to "highlight" her "thigh brow," where her thigh folds near her groin.

Like any other model or celebrity, Ashley Graham often has her body picked apart on social media.

The curvy supermodel has found herself at the center of Photoshop controversies before, and was recently accused of having her photo in Sports Illustrated edited.

However, in a new interview with New York Magazine's The Cut, Graham made it clear that she's staunchly against using the photo editing tool.

According to the August 6 interview, the model specifically asked The Cut not to Photoshop her.

"Multiple times, she goes over to the monitor, points out areas she's worried might get Photoshopped, and asks us not to do it, for her sake, her fans', and ours," the article reads.

@NYMag

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@theashleygraham) on Aug 6, 2017 at 6:47pm PDT on

Graham made a couple of other requests during the photo shoot, asking the magazine not only to leave her body unretouched but also to emphasize her "thigh brow," where her thighs fold above her groin, and her cellulite — areas that are often considered imperfections.

According to the article, "on shots where her thighs look particularly bumpy," Graham told them, "It's better to keep the cellulite if you can. You can make it bigger!"

While using Photoshop is arguably a personal decision, it's refreshing to hear of a model who not only wants to keep her body unretouched but wants to accentuate what are often deemed "problem areas," to show other women how beautiful those aspects can truly be.

👸🏼👸🏼👸🏼

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@theashleygraham) on Aug 7, 2017 at 4:58am PDT on

It's not the first time Graham has spoken up about Photoshop.

The Cut references the time when Elle Canada edited a photo of the model in July 2016, and she responded by sharing the unretouched photo on Instagram.

"I was just being honest," she told the magazine, "like, 'Here's the real back and belly fat,' and it spiraled into, 'Maybe I'm a body activist. I'm going to call myself one!'"

Graham does call herself a body activist in her Instagram bio, though she told the magazine that she thinks it "kind of sucks" that her size is what has made her famous.

The model said that she isn't a fan of the term "plus-size," either, since it implies that "plus" women are different to the norm of "straight-size" women. She added that, though she has no problem with other women who have embraced the term, she likes the words "curvy" or "curve" better.

Such a fun shoot with #maurizocattelan & #pierpaoloferrari 💋

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@theashleygraham) on Aug 7, 2017 at 4:55am PDT on

She also admitted that she wishes she didn't have to talk about her body all the time, but she understands the importance of doing that.

As she told The Cut: "I know I'm paving the way for the next generation of girls, and they're not going to have to do this. That's what I hope. I'll take the brunt work and just handle it, and then you guys can just sail right on through."

As much as we love to hear Graham's opinions on Photoshop and body positivity, we share the hope that women will stop having to answer for themselves when it comes to their bodies.

Gigi Hadid's mom looks just like her in this throwback photo

Gigi and Yolanda Hadid

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Gigi Hadid posted a throwback photo of her mom from her modeling days.
  • Her mom, Yolanda Hadid, looks very similar to Gigi in the photo.
  • Yolanda used to strut down the runway for Ford Models in Europe.

In our many years as *serious*
journalists, we’ve come across several Gigi Hadid lookalikes. There was the Danish model in June who shared Gigi’s beach-blonde hair and sumptuous blue eyes. Then there was the Dutch model last week, who people confusingly labeled as “plus-size.” And while these doppelgängers came pretty darn close, no one’s looked more identical to the 22-year-old supermodel than her own mama, Yolanda Hadid.

The oldest Hadid sister made that especially clear on Monday when she shared an epic throwback picture of her mom from her modeling heyday. For those unaware of the Hadid family history, before Bella and Gigi were a thing, Yolanda was the family’s premier model. Before the mom of three birthed two fashion “It” girls, she was strutting her own stuff down the runway as a top face for Ford Models in Europe.

Given that runway-walking runs in the Hadids’ blood, it would make sense that Yolanda would look eerily similar to Gigi back in the day. In the picture, Yolanda can be seen sporting a voluminous updo, side-swept bangs, and dangly gold earrings. As far as similarities, we can see where Gigi got her signature supermodel pout, golden-blonde hair color, and envy-worthy bone structure.

gigi yolanda hadid

While we frequently see Yolanda as Gigi’s No. 1 cheerleader behind-the-scenes on photoshoots and in the audience of runway shows, it was the supermodel offspring’s turn to fangirl over her mom. Along with bringing us another lookalike photo to fawn over, Gigi also hashtagged the word “MOM” in big red font to show her mama some love. And though Yolanda hasn’t stepped foot on the runway in years, we would love to see her come out of retirement for a final catwalk with her daughters.

  • While at home, she said she often orders Indian and Thai dishes through Postmates.

Over the years, several celebrities have shared their secrets to staying healthy and fit.

Recently, model and actress Emily Ratajkowski did quite the opposite when discussing what she typically eats on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

During her Monday night appearance, which we first read about on PeopleRatajkowski admitted to being a huge fan of food.

“I’m not someone who cooks. I’m someone who eats — a lot,” Ratajkowski said. "You should see my refrigerator. It's insane."

Besides having a loaded kitchen, the star shared that she's a fan of ordering food through Postmates.

"I have a relationship with Postmates," she said. "It's basically Indian food and Thai food, preferably when I'm horizontal in bed. I've had people come over and watch me eat then say, like, 'I've lost all respect for you.'"

As People points out, Ratajkowski's Instagram feed documents a few of her unique tastes.

In August 2014, the star told Elle that not being so hard on herself is more important. "I think it's really important to give yourself a break," she said. "And also just really think about where things are coming from and what kind of ingredients are going into your body."

Those of us who aren't successful models could benefit from her advice — and while we're giving ourselves a break, we should probably take what celebrities eat with a pinch of salt as well.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Adidas is being criticized by fans for using Kendall Jenner as a brand ambassador in a new ad.
  • The ad compares the model to the goddess Venus and tells viewers that "original is never finished."
  • In the ad, Jenner says: "I did what I had to do. I faced it all, and I stood tall. I did it my my way."
  • Many people have argued that Adidas should have used an athlete instead of a model, and said that there's nothing "original" about her.
  • A few people have defended Jenner, however, and see nothing wrong with the ad.

Adidas is being criticized for featuring Kendall Jenner in its new ad, which compares the reality star and model to the goddess Venus and tells viewers that "original is never finished."

As The Wrap notes, Jenner appears to be wearing an Adidas crop top and sneakers with underwear as she lies in a hibernation chamber in the ad, and says: "I did what I had to do. I faced it all, and I stood tall. I did it my my way."

The video also shows stills of Botticelli's iconic 1486 painting "The Birth of Venus," and cuts to a black model who — unlike Jenner — isn't tagged in the video on Instagram.

Here's the ad, which was shared on the sportswear brand's Instagram account on August 9.

A post shared by adidas Originals (@adidasoriginals) on Aug 10, 2017 at 6:36am PDT on

People left scathing comments on the video, arguing that there was nothing "original" about Jenner.

Some commenters felt Jenner was a poor choice to represent the message behind the ad. One person wrote: "You faced it all? What did a bourgeois like you face? War in Iraq? Cancer? Hunger? Poverty? Have you even had a cavity?"

"Why, Adidas??? Why???? She's far from original and wrong model [sic] for Adidas.. WRONG," another user commented.

Others took issue with the reference to Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus," with one user writing: "How dare you compare this plain Jane trash girl to the beautiful piece of art!"

Several people were so angered that they threatened to boycott the sportswear brand altogether, and argued that Adidas ought to have used an athlete instead.

"How about an athlete representative? How about someone who had to struggle with real challenges to do it their way? Bad choice @adidasoriginals I won't buy anything from you until her contract is done. You can do way better than THIS," one person commented.

Despite a barrage of negative comments, a few people stood up for Jenner.

"Kendall is a model who is doing her and doing it well. This video is being covered by all fashion sites and they are calling it edgy and cool," one person wrote. "It has been doing great on social media which is one of the reasons she got the gig. Her family does not help her get job if anything she loses job because of the over exposure."

Another user said: "If you think it's still cool to hate on Kendall and her family you're ignorant and corny as hell. This post doesn't put her above or below anybody I don't understand why y'all pressed for. Congratulations Kendall."

Of course, it's not the first time that Jenner has been slated for appearing in an ad.

In April, Pepsi pulled a controversial ad showing the model with a cast of protesters emulating messages of the "Black Lives Matter" movement. Both Pepsi and Jenner faced intense backlash over the ad, which was accused of cultural appropriation. The brand later apologized for the scandal.

INSIDER contacted Adidas to request comment and had not heard back at the time of this post.

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Victoria's Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel spoke to The Cut about how she stays in incredible shape.
  • Swanepoel starts her day with coffee and a shower but opts for a night time workout.
  • The model also opened up about how motherhood has changed her health and wellness habits.

Victoria's Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel is one of the most recognizable faces from the lingerie brand. After giving birth to her first baby in October of this past year, the South African model said that some things have changed when it comes to her health and wellness habits.

Almost one year after her son's birth, 28-year-old Swanepoel spoke with New York Magazine's The Cut about motherhood, wellness, and her go-to breakfast routine. Here's what she does to stay in such great shape.

She always starts her mornings with coffee and a shower ... even though she doesn't recommend the caffeine.

"I can't really do anything until I've had a coffee or a shower — it resets me," she told The Cut. She does mention that she tried to stop drinking coffee before she got pregnant, but needs it to keep herself going.

Swanepoel recommends trying to replace your usual coffee fix with decaf tea or hot chocolate.

Sometimes she has a smoothie, other times she has grilled cheese for breakfast.

🙌🏼 life!

A post shared by Candice Swanepoel (@angelcandices) on Apr 13, 2016 at 8:02am PDT on

The model said that her breakfast "varies depending on my mood." Sometimes she has a smoothie filled with coconut oil, flaxseed oil, banana, protein, and fruit or nut butter.

"I discovered it from doing research," she said. "I've always loved nutrition and because I've worked out for so many years, I've figured out what's best for my body and keeping my energy up."

When she's in the mood for something other than a smoothie, she'll have eggs and toast or a grilled cheese.

She plans her work outs at night, and they're usually a mixture of things.

With a busy schedule and a young baby, Sawnepoel schedules her workouts for later in the evenings. But she usually doesn't do a traditional gym session instead opting for her "own kind of yoga," where she combines Pilates, yoga, and resistance work that she has learned over the years.

"It's calm: I can meditate through it and get some flow with some music," she said. "It's a little ritual for me. I do it every time I feel overwhelmed and stressed — I try at least twice a week."

She has a beauty routine that she sticks with and part of it is a secret.

Swanepoel uses a green tea cleanser and retinol as part of her skin care routine. "I cleanse, tone, moisturize, and then do an eye cream religiously, twice a day," she said. What she won't say is the special moisturizer that her  facialist gave her — "it's a secret."

She listens to — and works with — her body.

There's no one right way to be healthy, and Swanepoel knows that she has to listen to her body.

"I've always been in tune with my body," she said. "I started dancing when I was really young, and it just gives you a different sense of your body."

She compares bodies to machines, with each one being different and needing its own personal care.

She embraces motherhood and all the changes that come with it.

"The amount of time I have has changed," she said. "Now I have a lot less time to focus on myself."

Even though she has less time to herself, the model is amazed at the entire process of pregnancy and motherhood — especially when it comes to the female body.

"It definitely changes after you have a baby," she said. "Having a baby is, like, extraterrestrial stuff. I'm amazed by how it bounced back and repaired. Creating a life in your tummy — it's amazing."

What's also amazing is how balanced and level headed the model is when it comes to changes that go with motherhood. She is the perfect example of making it work, and her 11 million Instagram followers and countless fans should be impressed — we certainly are.

Adidas defends its controversial Kendall Jenner ad and calls her 'a classic icon'

kendall jenner

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Adidas' new ad featuring Kendall Jenner as an ambassador for the brand's Originals line sparked outrage from fans on social media.
  • Fans argued that there was nothing "original" about Jenner, and were disappointed that an athlete wasn't used in the ad instead.
  • Adidas has defended the ad in a statement provided to INSIDER.
  • The statement said: "A longtime fan of the brand, Kendall embodies the spirit of Adidas Originals as a creative force shaping the world today by challenging the status quo in her very own way. A classic icon, Kendall is a true Original and we welcome her to our family."

A new Adidas ad featuring Kendall Jenner sparked outrage from social media users when it was shared on Instagram last week, on August 9.

Many people were disappointed that the sportswear brand used the reality star and model instead of an athlete for its "Original is never finished" campaign, while others felt that Jenner didn't reflect the ad's message of originality.

Despite the immense backlash from fans, a representative from Adidas has defended its ad in a statement provided to INSIDER following our request for comment.

"A longtime fan of the brand, Kendall embodies the spirit of Adidas Originals as a creative force shaping the world today by challenging the status quo in her very own way," a representative for the brand said. "A classic icon, Kendall is a true Original and we welcome her to our family."

Here's the ad in question:

Venus reborn @KendallJenner for #ORIGINALis

A post shared by adidas Originals (@adidasoriginals) on Aug 10, 2017 at 6:36am PDT on

The ad featured Jenner wearing an Adidas crop top and sneakers with underwear in a hibernation chamber. She says: "I did what I had to do. I faced it all, and I stood tall. I did it my my way." The commercial also cut to images of Botticelli's 1468 painting "The Birth of Venus," comparing Jenner to the goddess, and briefly showed a black model who — unlike Jenner — was not tagged in the brand's Instagram post.

One social media user was offended by the ad's reference to Botticelli's painting: "How dare you compare this plain Jane trash girl to the beautiful piece of art!"

Others expressed that they wished an athlete had been featured instead of Jenner. One person commented: "How about an athlete representative? How about someone who had to struggle with real challenges to do it their way? Bad choice @adidasoriginals I won't buy anything from you until her contract is done. You can do way better than THIS."

Some people even threatened to boycott the brand. "This is where I stop wearing Adidas," one user wrote.

Although some people defended Jenner in the comments, and offered the model "congratulations" on the gig, the majority of comments appear to be negative ones.

Here's the full statement Adidas provided to INSIDER:

"Original Is Never Finished celebrates a new group of creators, each who identify in their own way with the current generation. Each creative embodies the spirit of adidas Originals as a pioneering force shaping the world today by challenging the status quo in their very own way. All are true Originals and we look forward to our creative journey together. A longtime fan of the brand, Kendall embodies the spirit of adidas Originals as a creative force shaping the world today by challenging the status quo in her very own way. A classic icon, Kendall is a true Original and we welcome her to our family."

The 'Six-Pack Mom' posted a workout video while 8 months pregnant to shut down 'experts' who shame her

Sarah Stage

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Lingerie model Sarah Stage posted a video working out at almost eight months pregnant.
  • Stage has been shamed for posting photos of her baby bump with visible abs before.
  • She has defended herself against the "Instagram medical experts" who criticize and question her exercise regimen.
  • Stage's latest post defends her exercise choices, saying that she does not work out for vain reasons but rather for the health of her and her baby.
  • The model also argued that it is every mother's right and decision to determine what is right for her and her baby.

Sarah Stage is used to facing criticism on social media.

The 33-year-old model and mother has been shamed for doing crunches and other workouts while six months and seven months into her pregnancy with her second child.

Now almost eight months pregnant, Stage has posted another workout video — which we first saw on Cosmopolitan — to defend her decision to exercise throughout her pregnancy.

"Since I've announced my second pregnancy, I've had certain 'Instagram medical experts' tell me what I should and shouldn't do," her caption reads. "And while I find some of the comments hilarious, I choose to only listen to my OBGYN and of course I also listen to MY body."

Stage argued that exercise is good for the health of both her and her baby. She also said that she always listens to her body and her doctor, and has reduced the intensity of her workouts from pre-pregnancy. "If something feels off, I don't do it," she wrote.

A post shared by MY FITNESS EBOOK AVAIL NOW 👇🏼 (@sarahstage) on Jul 17, 2017 at 12:02pm PDT on

Her latest Instagram video received over 300,000 likes at the time of this post, and tons of comments from both supportive followers and people who question her authenticity.

"Crazy that people think that YOU a physically fit healthy woman is unhealthy and they think that eating like a cow and gaining 50+ pounds during pregnancy is normal and healthy," one commenter wrote. "I'm sure it would be hard having everyone on here giving you advice like they are pro's [sic]. Keep doing what you are doing," another wrote.

One commenter pointed out how Stage's case isn't the norm for most pregnant women. "You look fantastic and you went 8 months without showing. That's great," the user wrote. "But it's very rare [...] What is most likely annoying your audience is the lack of authenticity. Recognizing that your situation is rare and that you still face challenges like every other woman during your pregnancy."

Stage ends her post talking about the reasoning behind her exercise regimen, and claims that she doesn't exercise for vain reasons.

"There are also some people who assume that since I am exercising while pregnant, that I'm obsessed with how I "look" but in fact I'm obsessed with maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will give my baby and myself the best possible quality of life," she writes.

As a previous INSIDER article noted, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says that women can continue to exercise during a normal pregnancy as long as they're healthy enough.

However, the organization also warns pregnant women against "long periods of lying flat on their backs," and says this "should be avoided as much as possible" to prevent compressing a vein that sends blood to the heart from the lower half of the body. According to the ACOG and What to Expect, that could cause potential issues with circulation and low blood pressure.

The decision to exercise while pregnant is arguably one to be made by the mom-to-be and her doctor. Stage claims that she doesn't judge anyone who chooses to not be active during pregnancy — because everybody is different and no two pregnancies are the same.

You can read Stage's full caption below:

As I'm nearing #8monthsI've wanted to share what's been on my mind. Since I've announced my second pregnancy, I've had certain "Instagram medical experts" tell me what I should and shouldn't do.. And while I find some of the comments hilarious, I choose to only listen to my OBGYN and of course I also listen to MY body. If something feels off, I don't do it! I always do what's best for my growing baby and put him first! It's a proven medical fact that continuing exercising while pregnant has many health benefits for you and baby 🤰🏻👶🏻 Clearly, I have greatly reduced the intensity of my workouts and stick to at home home exercises from my Fitness Ebook 2-3x a week. There are also some people who assume that since I am exercising while pregnant, that I'm obsessed with how I "look" but in fact I'm obsessed with maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will give my baby and myself the best possible quality of life 😊 Alternatively, I don't judge anyone who chooses to not be active while pregnant etc. as it's their own life... I'm just sharing my pregnancy journey and appreciate the positive support from most of you ❤️ #thirdtrimester #7monthspregnant#8monthspregnant

23-year-old model opens up about how gaining weight helped her body image: 'I genuinely thought I was fat'

SARAH HARRIS

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Warning: this post may be triggering and contains descriptions of disordered eating.
  • Model Sarah Harris recently posted a side-by-side photo of herself on Instagram.
  • One photo showed the model's weight at 56 kg (about 123 pounds), and the other showed her at 63 kg (about 139 pounds).
  • Harris writes that gaining weight changed her body image and her relationship with food.

Model Sarah Harris is not known for posting side-by-side photos on her Instagram. In fact, the 23-year-old typically posts professional pictures from photoshoots and the occasional workout pic.

But she changed things up recently by posting photos from before and after her weight gain, which we spotted on The Daily Mail. Harris opened up about everything from her body insecurities to her struggle with maintaining a healthy relationship with food.

WARNING: Real talk ✔️ I've only ever shared this with one person... but after the messages, it's time to speak up. . Prior to the left photo I was insecure, 49kg (I'm 5"9) and so paranoid about even sniffing a carb. I genuinely thought I was fat, I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw. If I ate even half a chocolate bar I would run to the bathroom and force myself to be sick. This all came from my own insecurities and past bfs calling me fat, grabbing my "love handles" and comparing me to girls online. Over the period of 4 or so years I started to hate myself more and believed what they were saying 100% . In 1. (56kg) I started training and eating more, I started to like my body moreeeee. Still sticking to super strict, fad diets which always resulted in me binging on muffins and chocolate in the supermarket car park incase my ex (bf then) would find out. I was doing cardio 5 times a week and still had a f*ckd up toxic relationship with food. Pathetic right? It actually got that bad though, and NOW it seems crazy. You'll think the left photo is a before pic, but to me it still shows part of my mental and physical journey. . In 2. (63kg) I'm happy, healthy do next to no cardio and eat a balanced diet off #leflexfitness I have my better half to support me, tell me I'm beautiful every day and he NEVER says what I "can't" eat. I've had so many messages from ppl saying there partners won't "let them" eat dessert and it strikes a nerve, coming from past relationships like that, I urge you to kick them to the curb. . I could not be more grateful to have someone stick by my side and be so persistent in helping my body image over the last year. Yes, it's taken Josh an entire year to work on my insecurities and horrible self image! Sometimes you just need that one persons support to completely change your mind set. If you don't have that person, please don't hesitate to reach out. I of all people know it's difficult, and it's a long road. But it's truly worth it in the end. . I know some of you will hate me for this post, but Idc. We're all on our own journey, all at different chapters and if I can influence just 1 of you to change you opinion on food I'm happy.

"Prior to the left photo I was insecure, 49 kg [108 pounds] (I'm 5'9'') and so paranoid about even sniffing a carb," she wrote in the caption. "I genuinely thought I was fat, I looked in the mirror and hated what I saw."

Harris said that she would "force [herself] to be sick" after eating half a chocolate bar and that her insecurities stem from past partners calling her fat and "grabbing [her] 'love handles.'" She claims she started to believe the hurtful comments her partners would say.

"Over the period of four or so years I started to hate myself more and believed what they were saying 100%," she wrote. She explained that she tried to stick to strict diets and intense cardio sessions, but would end up "binging on muffins and chocolate in the supermarket car park incase [her] ex (bf then) would find out."

"I was doing cardio five times a week and still had a f----- up toxic relationship with food," she said.

Now she reports that her relationship with food is much healthier, especially with the help of her new supportive partner. This change resulted in her weight increasing from 56 kg, about 123 pounds, to 63 kg, or about 139 pounds.

The post has received over 15,000 likes and tons of comments from people who relate to her story.

"Respect @iamsarahharris, nothing but serious respect for you because of what you've come through. I love that you have the courage to post that message, and I can't help but think it will help more than a few girls who are struggling with self image," one commenter wrote.

"Very brave of you to be open about your bulimia. It lifts some of that stigma, which is so important to people suffering from eating disorders," another wrote. "Both are beautiful to me but I'm glad you're happier with yourself, because at the end of the day that's all we have is ourselves," someone else commented.

Harris ended her post by claiming she knows "some of you will hate me for this post, but [I don't care]." Even so, she hopes that her message will help influence even just one person to change their opinion on food.

Harris's post shows that gaining weight is not necessarily a bad thing and that having a healthy relationship with food is essential to your overall well-being.

A model is being accused of Photoshopping her body to look slimmer in a swimsuit photo on Instagram

Kelly Brook

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Model Kelly Brook is being accused of altering her body in an Instagram photo of her wearing a swimsuit.
  • Fans noticed that the decking she was standing on in the photo looked distorted.
  • The 37-year-old model hasn't responded to the accusations.
  • Brook has admitted to using Photoshop in the past.
  • "Sometimes if I see a picture and I can make it a bit better then I will, like everyone else does," Brook told The Sun in 2016. "I've been Photoshopped in every picture since I started modelling. I [don't] see any problem with it."

Model Kelly Brook is in hot water again after a few users on Instagram claimed that her body looked Photoshopped.

In a post from August 28, Brook can be seen posing in a variety of photos combined to form a picture collage. The photo, which we first saw on The International Business Times, had over 17,000 likes at the time of this post.

Focusing on the middle image, the deck Brook is standing on appears to be a tad distorted. However, it's hard to make a clear judgment call due to the shadows cast by foliage in the background.

Kelly_Brook_Instagram_Controversy_3

Nonetheless, some people are adamant that she edited the image to enhance her curves and make her look slimmer.

"Photo shop look at the decking [sic]," one user commented. A separate Instagrammer responded to Brook directly saying, "you should kill your photoshop designer @iamkb. Horrible."

One fan immediately came to her defense. "I can't believe there are men screaming photoshop, seriously sort your lives out," they wrote.

It's not the first time Brook has been accused of using Photoshop to alter her appearance on Instagram. In July, Brook was met with criticism for posting another swimsuit photo (below) while vacationing in France. Followers and strangers alike accused the model of airbrushing the image to make her waist look smaller, and sparked a similar discussion about warped pool decking.

Although the model hasn't addressed any recent accusations of using Photoshop, she defended herself on Twitter earlier in August after online bullies called her a "beached whale" and suggested that she lose weight.

Amid the rumors and controversy surrounding her body, Yahoo reported in July that Brook has previously admitted to Photoshopping her images.

"Sometimes if I see a picture and I can make it a bit better then I will, like everyone else does," she said in a 2016 interview with The Sun's Fabulous magazine. "I've been Photoshopped in every picture since I started modelling. I [don't] see any problem with it."

A representative for Kelly Brook did not immediately reply to INSIDER's request for comment.

Miranda Kerr

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Former Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr recently revealed what she eats in a day.
  • Kerr starts off her mornings with hot lemon water and has either a smoothie or pancakes for breakfast.
  • Her lunch and dinner feature unique salads and lean protein like salmon and chicken.

Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr recently revealed everything she eats in a day in a video for Harper's Bazaar.

The 34-year-old Australian supermodel, with the help of her dog Teddy, showed how to make her favorite meals including her recipe for banana pancakes, a simple fresh salmon lunch, and a giant salad filled with over ten ingredients.

Here's everything Kerr likes to eat in a day — and it involves a lot of lemons

Unlike coffee addicts, Kerr's morning wake-up call is hot water with fresh lemon.

"It's a really great way to kind of kick start your digestion," she said. "It's full of vitamin C." Kerr isn't the only star to start her day with hot lemon water.

Meghan Markle, Drew Barrymore, Giada de Laurentiis, and Christie Brinkley are also fans of this morning beverage. TIME reported that lemon water could indirectly help people lose weight by staying hydrated

Her breakfast is usually a smoothie filled with fresh fruit and veggies.

A post shared by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on Aug 8, 2017 at 6:27pm PDT on

Kerr's favorite smoothie ingredients are almond milk, fresh papaya, blueberries, raspberries, almond butter, and a serving of Kora Organics skin food supplement. Kerr is the founder of Kora Organic's, which sells everything from beauty supplements and skincare products to aromatherapy oils.

The supplement added to her smoothie contains noni, a popular medicinal tree or shrub found in Australia and Indonesia, as well as acai, blueberry, and matcha green tea.

If she's not in the mood for a smoothie, she makes banana-oat-egg pancakes for her and her son.

It’s a banana pancakes kind of Monday! 🍌 Ingredients: 1 banana, 1 egg + 1 egg white, 2 tablespoons of oatmeal & coconut oil to cook ✨💞✨

A post shared by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on Nov 30, 2015 at 9:18am PST on

"This is one of my favorite things to have for breakfast," she said. "I like it because they're healthy for him and he likes it because they're really yummy."

The recipe calls for range free eggs, oats, and a banana. Kerr blends them together and cooks them in coconut oil in a pan. She tops the mini pancakes with raspberries and coconut nectar sans sugary syrup.

Lunchtime usually consists of garlic salmon with a side salad.

Kerr's lunch puts sad desk salads to shame.

The model likes to have salmon seasoned with garlic, turmeric, and lemon with a side salad. She makes her own dressing to freshen up the sprouts, arugula, cucumber, purple cauliflower, and avocado salad. For the recipe, Kerr combines olive oil, lemon, apple cider vinegar, and a little sea salt.

While she doesn't always have time to make her own lunch, she notes that no matter what her day holds she sets aside time for some mindful eating.

"No matter how busy I am I really try to take a moment and just really be present with eating and really enjoy my food," she told Harper's Bazaar.

Her favorite dinner recipe is a slow roast chicken paired with a 10-ingredient salad.

It's no wonder that this is one of Kerr's best-loved meals. It was one of the dishes served at her wedding to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel.

Kerr seasons the chicken with onion, garlic, lemon, turmeric, and rosemary before cooking it for seven hours. She likes to serve it with sweet potato mash and a huge salad.

"So this is one of my favorite salads, it's super simple," she said. Kerr combines cabbage, baby spinach, parsley, cilantro, finely chopped cucumber, olives, halloumi cheese, sunflower seeds, pine nuts, and celery.

Kerr's fresh and simple recipes are an inspiration to get cooking and start adding lemon to almost everything.

Model Kelly Brook has had enough of body-shamers.

Since July, she's been targeted by online bullies who continue to post vicious comments under her bikini pictures on Instagram.

Making another attempt to defend herself, Brook took to Twitter on August 28 to shut down rumors that she recently used Photoshop to alter her famous body.

The tweet, which we first read about on Look, had over 9,000 likes at the time of this post.

"No photoshop! I have been Juicing and Detoxing dropping 3-4KG Feeling Amazing and am proud of my Body [sic]," she wrote.

On August 29, Brook was accused of editing this Instagram post to enhance her curves and make herself look slimmer.

Focusing on the middle image, some believed that the deck she is standing on looks distorted.

Earlier in August, Brook deleted one of her bikini pictures after a slew of online bullies suggested that she lose weight. One user even wrote that Brook looked like a "beached whale."

Hitting back on Brook's behalf, fans flooded her comments in support. One person took an extra step to tweet the model's original Instagram photo with an encouraging message:

"Let the haters hate Kelly, they're just missing out on what the rest of us enjoy!" they wrote.

Ultimately, Brook responded on Twitter to thank those who came to her defense.

"I have Lovely Smart people follow me on social media who i like talking with! I will not let the negativity of a few stop me sharing [sic]," she wrote.

Although the model has denied using Photoshop on this occasion, she has admitted to airbrushing her photos in the past.

"Sometimes if I see a picture and I can make it a bit better then I will, like everyone else does," she said in a 2016 interview with The Sun's Fabulous magazine. "I've been Photoshopped in every picture since I started modelling. I [don't] see any problem with it."

Regardless of whether or not someone has edited their appearance, body-shaming is never okay. Moreover, it's important to remember that no one — celebrities included — is required to respond to comments on their body or explain themselves at all.

A representative for Kelly Brook did not immediately reply to INSIDER's request for comment.

The trainer who gets Victoria's Secret models into shape reveals 3 mistakes you're making with your ab exercises

The INSIDER Summary:

  • Trainer Justin Gelband works with Victoria's Secret models like Karlie Kloss, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel, and more.
  • Gelband told INSIDER what people always get wrong about building ab muscles.
  • Conventional crunches are ineffective and aren't good for your back, he said.
  • He also believes nutrition is an underrated factor
  • Finally, many people don't realize their abs and core are different, he said.
  • He encourages people to strengthen their core by swimming, cycling, and adding rotational movements to their workouts.

Although Victoria's Secret might not be the most accurate place to get fitted for a bra, the models who represent the brand know a thing or two about staying in shape.

That's in large part thanks to personal trainer Justin Gelband, who is known for working with various Victoria's Secret supermodels including Miranda Kerr, Karlie Kloss, Martha Hunt, Irina Shaik, Candice Swanepoel, and Erin Heatherton. Here he is with Swanepoel and Heatherton.

INSIDER spoke with Gelband to dismantle some of the common misconceptions people have about building ab muscles, and what you can do to train and maintain a healthy core.

These are the biggest mistakes that can prevent you from building ab muscles, according to Gelband.

1. You're hung up on crunches.

Contrary to what many people think, Gelband believes crunches are ineffective.

"[Crunches] like when we were little kids and went to gym class the teacher would say 'you have to go all the way up and all the way down,' that doesn't do anything for you," the trainer told INSIDER. "That's because all you're doing is putting pressure on your spine [...] because you're using your neck instead of your stomach to actually do the exercise."

Putting so much pressure on your lower back is not a good idea. Harvard Medical School even says that sit-ups and crunches are not only hazardous for your back, but only work a few muscle groups.

One variation of the crunch that has been especially popular on social media are partner leg throwdowns, which are shown below.

Gelband does not approve of this exercise.

"Someone lays on their back and lifts their legs up in the air, and the person stands behind them and throws their legs up and down," the trainer said, describing the movement. "Oh my god that’s called the back breaker. That’s probably the worst exercise you can do in your life."

According to Gelband, the move doesn't let your other muscles engage in the movement thus limiting your range of motion and its overall effectiveness of this partner exercise.

2. You don't think about nutrition.

At the first mention of "abs," Gelband kept repeating one word: nutrition.

"Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition, nutrition," he said. Doing exercise is one thing, but making sure you're eating right is also crucial.

"So if you’re eating properly you can actually have a flat stomach," he said. "That doesn’t mean that if you eat like a crazy person and then go and do all these crazy boxing exercises and rotational exercises, where you’re actually using your lower back, that [you'll have a strong core]."

In terms of what to eat, Gelband is a big fan of dieting according to your blood type and said it's hard for him to tell people exactly what to eat. There are some foods that you should never eat if you want a flat stomach, though.

3. You think your core just means your abs, and you're only working them.

Your core and your abs are not the same thing. According to Gelband, your core is actually made up of a few different parts.

"No, it's not just your stomach. It's your hips, your lower back, your stomach and your butt all combined into a box," he said. "That [box] is what I usually work and I'm really able to define and establish a relationship between a person's brain and body and how they connect."

To work your "box," Gelband suggests doing rotational movements and activities like swimming, biking, and running on the beach that don't put as much pressure on your lower back as other exercises. "If you’re going to do certain ab exercises you need to do rotationary exercises and different movements and motions through something that’s not so abrasive as getting on the ground and doing 5,000 crunches," he said.

To sum up, Gelband's biggest tips are to learn how to engage all of your core muscles, skip the partner crunches, and pay more attention to what you eat. While following his advice will help strengthen your core, unfortunately there isn't a quick answer to getting supermodel abs.

L'Oreal ends contract with first transgender model over 'all white people are racist' Facebook post

L'Oreal has sacked its first ever transgender model after she described all white people as racist in a Facebook post.

Munroe Bergdorf, 29, reportedly landed a contract just days ago as one of five ambassadors for L'Oreal's "True Match" diversity campaign, launching a new range of foundations.

But a now-deleted Facebook post, which Bergdorf said she wrote weeks ago, has brought an end to the relationship.

The post reportedly said: "Honestly I don’t have energy to talk about the racial violence of white people any more. Yes ALL white people." She went on:

"Because most of ya'll don't even realise or refuse to acknowledge that your existence, privilege and success as a race is built on the backs, blood and death of people of colour.

"Your entire existence is drenched in racism. From micro-aggression to terrorism, you guys built the blueprint for this s***.

"Come see me when you realise that racism isn't learned, it's inherited and consciously or unconsciously passed down through privilege.

"Once white people begin to admit that their race is the most violent and oppressive force of nature on Earth… then we can talk.

"Until then stay acting shocked about how the world continues to stay f***** at the hands of your ancestors and your heads that remain buried in the sand with hands over your ears."

After the post surfaced, L’Oréal condemned Bergdorf's comments and announced that she has been sacked. In a statement on Twitter, it said:

Bergdorf responded to a request for comment from The Sun. She said the Facebook post was a direct response to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, America, last month.

"This 'rant' was a direct response to the violence of WHITE SUPREMACISTS in Charlottesville. It was not written this week," the model told The Sun.

"When I stated that 'all white people are racist,' I was addressing that fact that western society as a whole, is a SYSTEM rooted in white supremacy — designed to benefit, prioritise and protect white people before anyone of any other race.

"Unknowingly, white people are SOCIALISED to be racist from birth onwards. It is not something genetic. No one is born racist."

She went on: "The irony of all this is that L’Oréal Paris invited me to be part of a beauty campaign that 'stands for diversity.' The fact that up until very recently, there has been next to no mainstream brands offering makeup for black women and ethnic minorities, is in itself due to racism within the industry."

Bergdorf describes herself as an "activist" on Instagram and has met politicians including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
